Course Objective

Introduce ceramics, inform about shaping method of ceramics, identify the relationship between
microstructure and properties, acquaint characterization , apprise about bonding structures of silicates, state ceramıc
crystallographic structures,present glass and glass ceramics, inform about structural properties, identify glazes and give informations about advanced ceramic processing

3   To understand the crystallographic structures of ceramics
4   To understand the structure of silicates and interpret their thermal behaviour
5   To understand formation and layered structure of clays and clay- water systems
6   To learn the test and analysis methods of ceramics and gain the ability to interpret
7   To acquaint glass formation conditions and to learn cooling mechanisms of glasses
8   To define glass ceramics and to learn production procedures

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Definition,properties and grouping of ceramics, comparing with metals and polymers, formation characteristics and undertaken tasks of basic ceramic raw materials Manufacturing methods of ceramics,preparation of powder and mixtures, effects of powder size distribution and drying /sintering conditions on the final propertiesof ceramic materials
2 Shaping methods, its basic prenciples and differences ; pres, slip casting, extrusion, enjection moulding
3 Definition and formation of clays, structures of two and three layered clay minerals, heating behaviour and phase formation of clays and its importance in production, interpretation of DTA- TGA curves Clay- water systems, rheological behaviour, formation of double layers and importnce of zetapotentials
4 Bonding structures and properties of silicates, heating behaviour and phase transformation of silicates, properties of feldspars
5 Crystallograpic structures of ceramics, Drying and sintering processes, sintering mechanisms, grain growth and its effect on properties Test and analysis methods applied to ceramics, relationships between microstructure properties
6 Glazes,Definition, preparation,properties, matching properties with underlying substrates, dilatometry curves , Definition and forming condition of glasses, production of glasses and its types, temperature- viscosity relationship of glass melts,cooling mechanism, DTA curve, Definition and processing of glass ceramics, characteristic heattreatment temperatures and its determination
7 Characterization methods and Properties of ceramic products
8 Lab application, Viscosity, Thixotropy, Optimal electrolyte proportion,
9 Lab application, Dried, Fired and Total Shrinkage, Green, Dried and Fired Strength
10 Lab application, lost of ignition, surface humidity, fired colour, reaction to acids
