Course Objective

The objective of the Course is to introduce the effect of elevated temperatures on the thermal, mechanical and chemical properties and behaviour of engineering materials with an emphasis on metallic materials.

1   To be able to define thermal properties of materials
2   To be able to define mechanical properties of materials
3   To be able to define chemical properties of materials
4   To be able to express the effect of high temperatures on properties of materials
5   To be able to select materials for applications at high temperatures
6   To be able to discuss high temperature material behaviour through written and oral presentations prepared as a group

3 Diffusion and thermally activated processes
4 Mechanical properties and behaviour of metallic materials at ambient temperatures
5 Mechanical behaviour of metallic materials at elevated temperatures (creep)
6 Mechanical behaviour of metallic materials at elevated temperatures (rupture)
7 Midterm exam
8 Chemical properties of engineering materials
9 Chemical degradation of engineering materials at elevated temperatures (oxidation, corrosion)
10 Thermodynamic evaluation material degradation (Ellingham diagrams)
11 Effect of chemical degradation on the mechanical properties of materials
12 Materials selection for applications at high temperatures
