Course Objective

The aim of the course is to provide the concept of product design and to define the factors affecting fabric design; to teach the analysis for the design and production of woven fabrics with different methods according to certain objectives and constraints.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To identify the causes of product design and determine product design within the scope of realistic constraints
2   Ability to analyze the factors that affect fabric design.
3   Ability to determine and apply appropriate design techniques to design a woven fabric suitable for its usage.
4   Ability to establish the relationship between the physical structure of a woven fabric and the aesthetic properties of the fabric surface
5   Ability to report on woven fabric design and production

1 General Introduction to the Course. Introduction of Design: Design Definition, Design and Manufacturing Process, Factors affecting Design.
2 Manufacturing Techniques of Woven fabric. Woven Fabric Analysis. Information about Assignment 1.
3 General Design Theory and Introduction to Engineering Design. Application: Analysis of a given sample fabric.
4 Introduction of Basic Parameters that affect the Design: Form, Color, Figure, Texture. Arrange of Figure Effects and Surface Planning Deadline of Assigmnet 1; Information about Assignment 2.
5 Design of Figured Fabrics: 1. Design of Figured Fabrics Formed by Weave Combinations. 2. Design of Figured Fabrics Formed by Extra Warp Yarns.Solving sample problems.
6 Design of Figured Fabrics: 3. Design of Figured Fabrics Formed by Extra Weft Yarns.4. Design of Figured Fabrics Formed by Extra Warp and Weft Yarns. Solving sample problems. Deadline of Assignment 2.
7 Example for figured fabric . Information about Assignment 3.
8 Midterm Examination
9 Design of complex Woven Fabrics: Design of Backed Fabrics, Design of Double Fabrics, Design of Self-Stitched Double Fabrics, Design of Center-Stitched Double Fabrics.
10 Design of Interchanging Double Fabrics. Solving examples. Figure Techniques for Double Fabrics.
11 Design of Towels, Velvets, Carpets, Jacquard Fabrics.
12 Computer Aided Design Applications. Information about group study. Laboratory: Introduction of Handloom, definition of yarns. Deadline of Assignment 3.

Within the course, three individual assignments; 1 group assignment are given. The average of these assignments according to their weight is evaluated as "Project note".

Course Policies and Rules

This course aims the understanding of theory and practice together by oral presentations, solving sample problems, computer applications, answering students questions about homeworks, slide shows on sample designs, classroom application for fabric analysis and laboratory work. It is needed that homeworks are submitted in the announced dates and presented with orderly reports.
