Course Objective

To teach principal concepts and philosophies on the subject "quality and quality management''.
Quality management system standards, application methods, knowledge about benefits of these standards for enterprises.
To teach statistical process control tools and examples from textile sector.Raising the teamwork and communication abilities by group studies and presentations.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Skill of using statistical process conrol methods for different areas in textile industry.
2   To have principal knowledge about establishment of quality management system and acquiring quality management standard.
3   To gain quality-efficiency point of view on manufacturing.
4   To gain the ability to analyze quality variability and related problems, to be able to establish cause-effect relations in the textile industry.
5   To be able to check process qualification and product quality and to take corrective precautions .

1 Principal concepts, definitions:design quality,conformance quality, total quality control, quality assurance, quality managenement, quality policy, quality audits
2 Development of quality control philosophy in enterprises, quality control understanding in textile industry, effects of unique features of textile industry on quality control, quality / poor quality costs, Case studies
3 Philosophy and principles of statistical process and quality control. Some methods used in process control: Flow diagrams, control charts, various graphics
4 Some statistical methods used in process control: cause-effect diagrams, Pareto Analysis, principles and types of control charts.
5 Preparation and interpretation of control charts.Case studies of control charts for textile industry.
6 Total Quality Management: Philosophy, Principles.Benefits of Total Quality Management (TQM)applications for enterprises.Causes of failure in TQM applications

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

For the determination of homework grades of the students grouped to perform the homework, the students are expected to investigate the topics that are given by the lecturer separately for each group, to prepare a report and to give presentation to the students of the other groups at a predetermined date. The homework grade for each of group member is given by taking into consideration the prepared report of the presentation, in-class evaluation of the students who follow the presentation, in-class evaluation to determine the participation/efficiency of the group members who perform the presentation.

Assessment Criteria

30% Midterm Exam + 20% Assignment + 50% Final Exam
