Course Objective

In Knitting I lecture it is aimed to explain manufacturing techniques of knitted fabrics, the properties of knitting machines and knitting elements.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To able to learn the manufacturing of knitted fabrics.
2   To be able to understand the technology of knitting machines.
3   To be able to understand the effects of knitting machine technology to the properties of manufactured fabrics.
4   To able to learn different types of knitted structures.
5   To be able to knit basic knitted structures.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Definition of knitted fabric (weft-warp knitted fabric).Classification and properties of knitting machines and their products.
2 Basic knitting elements, knitting needles; latch, bearded and compound needle structures and loop formation.Knitting cams and their structures, the movement of needle in different cam positions.
3 The formation of weft knitted fabric on single and double bed knitting machines.
4 The other positions of the knitting needles; miss, tuck and transfer positions and the applications of these in knitted fabrics. Purl fabrics. The parameters of knitted fabrics-
5 Workshop- The knitting elements in hand knitting machine, different cam positions and manufacturing of simple knitted fabrics.
6 Workshop- The knitting elements in hand knitting machine, different cam positions and manufacturing of simple knitted fabrics.
7 Workshop- The knitting elements in hand knitting machine, different cam positions and manufacturing of simple knitted fabrics.
8 The parameters of circular knitting machine, single bed circular knitting machine, relanit and conventional single jersey machine.
9 Double bed circular knitting machine: Cross-section of the machine and its elements, the steps of the loop formation. Rib and interlock fabric
10 The knitted fabric structures manufactured in the circular knitting machines. The techniques of the needle selection. - Changing the height of the needle butt or the place of the butt.
11 The techniques of the needle selection. Changing the height of the needle butt or the place of the butt and mechanical jacquard systems.
12 The techniques of the needle selection. mechanical jacquard systems.
13 Coloured jacquard knitted fabrics
14 The techniques of the needle selection. Electronical jacquard systems. Yarn feeding and fabric take down systems.
