Course Objective

To provide the ability of doing a heating and ventilating design project by having the knowledge of insulation rules for buildings, fundamental and application principles of heating systems, heat loss calculation and calculation of pipe diameter in heating systems and ventilation.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe the basic concepts of heat transfer
2   Interpret compliance with thermal insulation of buildings
3   Explain the outdoor and indoor design conditions for heating systems
4   Calculate the heat loss in buildings
5   Select the radiator according to the heat loss
6   Design a piping system for the central heating systems
7   Select components for a distribution system
8   Design a ventilation system

3 Insulation of buildings, condensation
4 Classification of heating systems
5 1st project control
6 Inside and outside design conditions for heating systems, heat loss calculation (TS 2164)
7 Radiators and other heating equipments, heater selection, installation types
8 Column diagram, calculation of pipe diameter
9 Selection and settlement of boiler and boiler room, boiler safety equipments, fuel calculation, expansion rooms
10 Determination of pump characteristics
11 Introduction to ventilation and definitions, classification of ventilation
12 Calculation of ventilation ducts, culverts, selection of culverts and their calculation
13 2nd project control
14 Ventilation for specific and industrial process

Assessment Criteria

1st, 2nd and the 3th learning outcomes will be assessed by the 1st project control and Midterm exam. Learning outcomes from 4th to 8th will be assessed by the 2nd project control. All the learning outcomes will be assessed by the final exam.
