Course Objective

The objective of the course is teaching the basic principle of the modern characterization methods (XRD, XRF, SEM, EDS, FTIR etc.) and the utilization of these methods in the different stages of mineral processing and ore beneficiation.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define the basic principles of modern characterization methods,
2   State the generation, properties and utilization for characterization of x-Rays
3   Explain the structure and working principle of Scanning Electron Microscopy and, its utilization in the mineral processing and ore beneficiation
4   State the working principle of the equipment which can be defined the thermal properties of the minerals by theoritically and interpret their results
5   Determine the appropriate characterization methods for the mineral processing and ore beneficiation
6   Perform and report the applications of this course in group

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to the modern characterization devices and basic working principles Regulation of groups
2 Explain the generation and properties of x-rays Introductionof X-Ray lab.
3 The utilization of x-rays in mineralogical and chemical characterization and the presentation of XRD and XRF methods Sample preparation for XRD and XRF
4 Perform the mineralogical analysis by using XRD method XRD application
5 Perform the chemical analysis by using XRF method XRF application
6 Presentation of Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and sample preperation methods Sample preparation for SEM
7 Mid-term
8 Obtain the secondary electron images(SEI) in SEM SEI image
9 Obtain the back scattering electron images(BEI) in SEM BEI image
10 Perform the EDS analysis in SEM Analysis of the samples collected from electrolyte and evaluation of the results EDS analysis on the image
11 Investigation of the thermal properties of the samples using DTA/TGA method Demonstration and application
12 Investigation of minerals using FTIR methods Demonstration and application
13 Assignment preparation, presentation and evaluation Presentation
