Course Objective

Instructing Coal Specifications, coal preparation and washing methods and application principals. And also instruction the utilization processes of coal which are Carbonization, Gasification and combustion applications.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Determine the coal type by using coal specifications and able to comment.
2   Designate the coal pre investigations of coal preparation and comparative comments for applications.
3   Able to analyses selection criteria of methods and suggestions. Able to performance analysis.
4   Describe of dewatering and drying methods and able to choose .
5   Able to analyse relations between coal specifications and utilization areas.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Aims of coal preparation, environmental limitations on coal utilizations, and marketing specifications for coal, reserves and formation of coals.
2 Coal types, coal properties, coal petrology, coal analysis and characterizations and classification, Sampling for, sample preparation and size distribution analyses.
3 Size reduction, crushers and grinders, stocking and homogenization
4 Washability analyses, basics of coal washing according to gravity, method selection according to size.
5 Hydraulic based methods
6 Mid. term exam 1
7 Coal washing in heavy media, Heavy media based processes
8 Fine coal upgrading methods based on surface properties (flotation, agglomeration), dewatering and drying systems
9 Coking properties of coal, defining coking properties, methods of determining coking properties, optical properties of coal
10 Coal carbonization methods, low temperature carbonization, metallurgical coke production.
11 Combustion of coal and combustion methods.

13 Coal gasification
14 Presentation of homework reports, discussion and evaluation
