Course Objective

It is aimed to gain mining engineering students capability of problem definition, literature search, problem solving and result reporting ability by doing group work. The method of learning is based on solving several different mining engineering real case scenarios of 2 or 3 weeks long.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To apply reserve estimation techniques in mining
2   To select underground mining method, prepare plans and draw basic developments
3   To practice open pit mining facilities
4   To be able to draw bench plans suitable for topographic maps
5   To solve basic ventilation problems by using general fluid mechanic principles
6   To be able to plan rock mechanic laboratory experiments and apply
7   To be able to solve simple rock mechanic problems by using basic principles of mechanics.

1 Statistical analysis of drill core samples, definition of seam azimuth and dip
2 Drawing Izo-thickness maps, reserve estimation by cross-section method
3 To chose underground mining method
4 Application of cut and fill mining method and draw simple plans for its application
5 Definition of open pit mining elements, stripping ratio, slope angle applications
6 Bench plan application, map drawing
7 Drilling and blasting theory and application, problem solving
8 Basic ventilation principles, definition of necessary air quantity for underground
9 Air flow mechanism in mining main roads, paralel and serial roadways
10 Ventilator calculation, natural air flow
11 Rock mechanic laboratory test methods, geotechnical properties of rock masses
12 Rock mechanic laboratory
13 Sliding mechanism of discontinuity, application of mohr-colomb theory
14 Exercises about Drilling, undergroung mining open pit mining, ventilation, rock mechanics
