Course Objective

The objective of this course is to teach the outlines of Engineering Geology to Mining Engineering students.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Being able to define engineering properties of rocks
2   Being able to define engineering properties of soils
3   Being able to determine weathering grade of rocks
4   Being able to measure discontinuities in the field
5   Being able to calculate geotechnical parameters using rock cores (RQD%, CR%, geotechnical logging)
6   Being able to determine elasticity modulus of rock masses using different methods
7   Being able to interpret index test results of rocks (Schmidt Hammer test, Tilt test, Determination of Barton Shear Strength using joint roughness coefficient)

1 Overview of research methods in use in Engineering Geology, Difference between Engineering Geology & Geology and The Concept of Geotechniques
2 Rock material and rock mass differentiation in Engineering Applications
3 Discontinuities and Their Properties (Determination of the type of discontinuities and their orientation, aperture, persistence, frequency, filling properties, roughness)
4 Discontinuities and Their Properties (scan line, block size concept and calculation techniques
5 Permeability (Darcy Rule, Determination of permeability in the laboratory and in the field)
6 Weathering Grade Determination (In rocks and soils)
7 RQD%, CR% and Logging (Measuring using cores, considering-alpha, considering-Jv.
8 Determination of the strength of rock material [( c, Is50, t), Shear Strength (c, phi)
9 Rock Mass Classification Systems (RMR, Q, MRMR)
10 Elasticity Properties of Rock Material (Et, Es, Eav, G, K)
11 Elasticity Properties of Rock Mass
12 Selected index tests for rocks (Schmidt Hammer, Tilt Test and Barton Shear Strength)
