Course Objective

Understanding the geological and geotechnical Works along the axis of dam, reservoir site and derivation tunnel.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Being able to describe the factors governing selection of the type of dam and its site.
2   Being able to analyse the geological structure on which affect dam site
3   Being able to perform core drilling plan in dam site
4   Being able to interpret the results of the water pressure tests performed during the drillings
5   Being able to investigate the suitable material in the vicinity for dam construction
6   Being able to analyse the effect of geological structures on tunnelling
7   Being able to use the rock mass classification systems such as RMR, GSI and Q-systems
8   Being able to Project the support systems in tunnels.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Describing the factors governing selection of the type of dam and its site and general reviews of terminology and definitions of dams
2 Performing the water pressure tests in order to determine leakages and seeps observed in soil and rock masses and along fault zones in the reservoir site
3 Investigating the possibilities of suitable materials for dam construction
4 Problems related with the slope stability of abutments and their analysis
5 Determination of the number of boreholes and their spacings and depths (core drilling plans)
6 Analyses of the geological structures on which affect dam site and dam construction
7 1. Midterm exam
8 Problems encounter during the tunnelling, rock bursts
9 The effects of geological structures on tunnelling
10 Rock mass rating systems (RMR, GSI and Q-systems)
11 Design of support systems in tunnels
12 The relationships between geological strength index and Hoek-Brown failure criterion, Hoek-Brown s constant
13 2. Midterm exam
14 The envelopes of Hoek-Brown and Hoek-Brown, elastisity modulus of rock mass (Em), and uniaxial compressive strength of rock mass ( cm).
