Course Objective

To be able to obtain the skill in the application of geophysical methods, their interpretation and preparation of report

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   LO1. Be able to comprehend the basic concepts of engineering geophysics. 2   LO2. Be able to describe the required geologic and geotechnical properties which should be recognized in the selection of settlement areas 3   LO3. Be able to get the skill in order to obtain the dynamic elastic parameters with the geophysical methods 4   LO4. Be able to grasp the basic principles in the soil surveys and for the preparation of reports.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description 1 Introduction to engineering geophysics 2 Project design in geophysics and report writing 3 To be able to desribe the required geological and geotechnical properties which should be considered for the selection of settlement sites 4 Various physical properties of soils and rocks (seismiv velocity, density, electrical resistivity, magnetization) 5 To determine the soil dynamical properties (bearing, slipping, vibration, attenuation, ripping, dredging, penetrability) with the geophysical methods 6 Calculations of the dynamic properties of soils 7 To be able to determine the subsurface structure with the geophysical methods 8 To be able to determine depths to basement rock and bearing capacity of it, and to desribe voids, fractures and cracks 9 Determination of soil liquefaction and liquefaction potential 10 To investigate the underground networks (telephone, enegy, water and sewerage etc.) 11 To investigate underground tunnels, caves and contact zones 12 Pollution and saltation 13 Route and site selection 14 Preparation of reports and examples from various investigations
