Course Objective

The main purpose of the lecture is to outline the basic principles of coastal engineering, to present the utilization possibilities of coastal areas, and to teach the wave mechanics, wind-wave interaction and coastal zone seabed morphology topics

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to identify coastal engineering problems
2   Ability to interpret atmospheric phenomena sand interactions among land, sea, and air that occur at the coast
3   Ability to describe and determine effective factors at the coastal zone
4   Ability for evaluating the wave energy as a renewable energy source
5   Ability to explain the wind-wave relation and using wave forecasting methods
6   Ability to array morphological variations on the coastal zone and explaining the sea-soil-structure interaction
7   Ability to design physical models in coastal engineering and ability to determine physical scales

5 Linear Wave Theory (Wave Properties: Profile, Wavelength, Celerity, Wave Group, Particle Velocity, and Acceleration)
6 Linear Wave Theory (Wave Properties: Displacements, Subsurface Pressure)
7 Other Wave Theories; Non Linear Shallow Water Wave Theories; Cnoidal Wave Theory; Solitary Wave Theory
8 Wave Energy; Wave Power; Wave Energy Converters
9 Wave Transformation in Shallow Waters: Wave Shoaling, Refraction and Diffraction
10 Wave Transformation: Wave Breaking and Reflection, Irregular Waves (Random Sea Waves); Spectral Analysis
