Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce the students to the fundamental principles of soil mechanics and to ensure that students understand how these properties are used to solve some geotechnical problems like classification, compaction, seepage, compression, consolidation and shear strength.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to establish ground phase relations and to make soil classification.
2   To be able to evaluate the soil compression ratio based on the results of laboratory and field experiments.
3   To know the effective stress and pore water pressure concepts, to make the infiltration calculations.
4   To be able to calculate one-way compression and time-dependent settlements.
5   To know the principles of shear strength of soils.
6   To be able to interpret engineering analysis findings and to present them in written form.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF SOILS: Formation of soils, soil components and phase relationships.
2 Soil types and structural properties.
3 Index properties of soils (grain size distribution, relative density, consistency). Announcement of first homework.
4 Soil classification (USCS and AASHTO systems). Compaction of soils (laboratory compaction, field compaction, compaction control).
5 STRESSES ACTING ON THE SOIL: Geostatic soil pressures (total, effective and pore water pressures). Influence of seepage on effective stress. Time dependence of effective stress change.
6 SEEPAGE: Hydraulic gradient, Darcy, seepage velocity, seepage equation, flow net construction. Announcement of second homework.
7 Hydraulic conductivity (laboratory and field tests): factors affecting, typical values and classification. Capillary water: height, pressure and affects.
8 ONE DIMENSIONAL COMPRESSION AND CONSOLIDATION: One dimensional compression equation, oedometer test and evaluation of test results, preconsolidation pressure, compression of normally and over consolidated soils. Announcement of third homework.
9 Consolidation equation and its solution, consolidation ratio. U-T relationships.
10 Time dependent loading. Determination of coefficient of consolidation.
11 SHEAR STRENGTH: Stability problems. Coulomb s shear strength envelope, Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion.
12 Shear strength tests: Triaxial compression test (UU,CD,CU), direct shear test.
13 Shear strength properties of soils (dry sand, saturated clay). Other strength tests (vane shear test, unconfined compression test). Sensitivity and tixotropy.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Course topics will be presented and applications will be performed in class for the enhancement of the subjects. Students will prepare reports on the solutions done with individually assigned data about classification and compaction of soil materials of a zoned embankment dam, seepage under a sheet-pile wall, compression and consolidation of a clay layer under a shore road fill, evaluation of shear box and triaxial compression test results.
