Course Objective

The aim of this course is to determine the stresses, strains and displacements under different load conditions. Topics on torsion, normal force and bending are covered in details. The elastic curve is determined differential equations. Displacements and sectional rotations are calculated by moment area method. It is planned to discuss buckling and energy methods which are the advanced topics in solid mechanics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Have the ability to analyze the systems under torsion, axial force and bending in details.
2   Have the ability to determine the elastic curve of an element under load. Have the ability to enlighten the other engineering parameters using elastic curve.
3   Have the ability to analyze the members under buckling.
4   Have the ability to analyze the mechanical systems using the energy methods which are used in solid mechanics frequently.
5   Have the ability to explain the assumptions and limitations of the formulas used.
