Course Objective

A sample highway section will be designed by the students in details as a term project. Every stages of the project will be discussed with each student.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to apply the knowledge gained by INŞ 3025 Transportation Engineering I
2   To be able to associate horizontal, vertical and other highway geometrical elements
3   To be able to design a highway segment for traffic safety point of view
4   To be able to compare different route alternatives for economic and safety points of view
5   To be able to draw the designed highway geometrical elements
6   To be able to estimate the socio-economic consequences of a highway project

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The sketch of sample terrain map, zero line application, calculation of radius related to horizontal curves
2 The study of road location, the drawing of ground profile based on chosen highway location
3 To make a definite location of the road, deflection angle, external distance, calculation of the length of road route
4 The design of super elevation, the design of transition curve
5 The location of vertical curve, the calculation of grade elevation
6 Design of cross-sections
7 Calculation of cut & fill arear and volumes
8 The drawing of Bruckner diagrams
9 Make necessary calculations for the balance of earth works by using Bruckner diagram
10 Experiments conducted on subbase and base materials, experiments conducted on wearing course materials
11 Pavement thickness evaluation methods
12 Determination of pavement thickness
13 Project finalization
14 The overall evaluation of the project
