Course Objective

The aim of the course is to provide students with a general overview of the basic geotechnical problems that civil engineers encounter in practice and to ensure that students understand the methods of analysis of these problems.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to distinguish between geostatic and limit lateral ground pressures.
2   To be able to apply total and effective stress analysis approaches.
3   To be able to make stability analysis of retaining structures and slopes.
4   To be able to calculate stress increases.
5   To be able to interpret engineering analysis findings and to present them in written form.

Mode of Delivery

1 LATERAL EARTH PRESSURES: Lateral soil deformation-lateral earth pressure relation, types of lateral earth pressures, geostatic horizontal earth pressure.
2 Limit lateral earth pressures, Rankine's Theory (horizontal and sloped backfill)
3 Coulomb's Theory, Force polygon. Announcement of first homework.
4 EARTH RETAINING STRUCTURES: Earth retaining walls, types and pre dimensioning, back fill and drainage, lateral earth pressures, forces and moments, stability of the wall and foundation. Announcement of first homework.
5 Other earth retaining structures: Stability analysis of Anchored Sheet pile walls (anchored, cantilever).
6 Other earth retaining structures (continued): Stability analysis of Cantilever sheet pile walls and reinforced earth wall. Announcement of second homework
7 Other earth retaining structures (continued): Stability analysis of diaphragm wall and trench stability.
8 SLOPE STABILITY: Circular failure analysis (fi_u = 0 method, method of slices: Fellenius, Bishop). Announcement of third homework.
9 Infinite slope analysis, wedge analysis with active and passive pressures,
10 Remedial and preventative options for slope stabilty.
11 STRESS INCREASE: Elastic theory approach (point load, rectangular area with uniform load, superposition and integration of point load, superposition of rectangular areas)
12 STRESS INCREASE: Elastic theory approach (the Newmark Chart, 63 ½ degree approach).
13 SETTLEMENT: Components of compression, amount-type-duration of settlement, consolidation settlement (normally and over consolidated soils),
14 SETTLEMENT: Elastic settlement.

Recomended or Required Reading

Craig, R.F. (2004): Craig's Soil Mechanics, Spon Press, Taylor & Francis Group, London, England, Seventh Edition, ISBN: 0-415-32703-2
Materials: Course notes and in class applications.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Course topics will be presented and applications will be performed in class for the enhancement of the subjects. Students will prepare reports on the analyses done with individually assigned data about cantilever wall, anchored sheet pile wall, effective stress analysis of downstream slope with seepage of an earth fill dam, geotechnical analysis (bearing capacity and settlement analyses) of shallow foundation.
