Course Objective

In this course, the importance and necessity of hydrochemical model approach to water treatment studies, conceptual model setup, data generation in model requirements, determination of effective water and species parameters in selected water composition, determination of hydrochemical model calculations in mass balance principles of natural and structured treatment systems, to be introduced at the basic level.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understanding of the concept of conceptual and computable hydrochemical model installation.
2   Understand the basic principles and data organization required for the use of the model, its purpose, installation and development.
3   Defining the dominant processes required for the reaction model.
4   Learning to use PHREEQCI software at the basic level in water treatment.
5   To plan methods for design of Water supply facilities with the data evaluation, drawing inferences from the findings, to reveal the differences in predictions from sampling to audience.
6   Understanding the boundaries between the chemical thermodynamics, mathematical approximation methods and the hydrochemical model and our theoretical calculations.

2 Conceptual model setup: Determination of system parameters
3 Process-oriented data generation in model requirements: Representative sampling, response relationship with measurement and analysis parameters
4 Homogeneous reactions: speciation
5 Calculation of species distribution
6 Effect of pH and redox conditions on species
7 Chemical equilibrium, solubility, precipitation reactions
8 Sequential mixtures and neutralization
9 Reaction formulation
10 Heterogeneous reactions: superficial complexation, ion exchange, solid and gas excess reactions.
11 Sorption models
12 Neutralization reaction model
13 Water treatment by hydrochemical model approach
