Course Objective

The objective is to introduce, to students of different engineering disciplines, the working principles some of the modern equipments by which properties of engineering materials are determined. Students form interdisciplinary groups to do simple projects related to the applications of such equipment.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to classify engineering materials
2   To be able to explain the similarities and differences between optical and electron microscopes
3   To be able to define the equipments that are used to determine physical and chemical properties of materials
4   To be able to define the equipments that are used to determine thermal and mechanical properties of materials
5   To be able to search for and gather information about the applications of such equipment
6   To be able to organize and work in interdisiplinary groups to share information, write short reports and make presentations

Course Contents

1 Introduction, Classification of engineering materials
2 Introduction of the ways of approaching materials characterization by using modern characterization equipment
3 Working principle and parts of the optical (light) microscope, preparation of samples
4 Parts and sample preparation for the electron microscope, introduction of the scanning electon microscope (SEM)
5 Use of SEM for observing surface and internal structures of materials
6 Use of SEM for chemical analyses; EDS method
7 Production and properties of X-rays
8 Use of X-rays for crystal structure determination and chemical analysis of materials; XRD and XRF methods
9 Equipments used to investigate thermal properties of materials; TGA, DTA and DSC methods
10 Equipments used to investigate mechanical properties of materials Project Report
11 Midterm exam
12 Other equipments used to analyze materials; EPMA, FTIR, OES methods
