Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to enhance our understanding of historical development and political ideas shaping European integration and major political developments. The reading material covers major political ideas and processes after the end of Second World War such as federalism, functionalism and intergovernmentalism as well as a recent debate on crises of integration. The attention then shifts to major historical steps in constructing European integration process and particular integration policies such as Single Market, Economic and Monetary Union, social policy and Common Foreign and Security Policy. The course ends with a debate on double crises of integration in economics and politics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Examine the historical background of the EU in order to understand political and economical underpinnings of European integration process.
2   Demonstrate conceptual understanding of the gradual evolution of European political cooperation to explain the current level of European integration.
3   Identify the policy areas of the EU to evaluate the competencies of the Union.
4   Recognize the EU's decision-making mechanisms to comprehend the functioning of the Union.
5   Develop skills to engage in discussions with other students and the lecturer.
