Course Objective

This course will begin with the history of salvage and the general principles and go on with the legal issues such as; The Salvage Convention, Lloyd s Open Form and the SCOPIC clause. Concept of Modern Salvage will be covered and variety of salvage practices around the world will be discussed. The course will also include the technical aspect of salvage operations.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To ensure that students have general knowledge of ship salvage operations. 2   Ensure that students have knowledge of the legislation on ship salvage.

Week Subject Description 1 General Information. 2 Brief history of marine salvage, marine salvage law. 3 The concept of marine salvage, elements of marine salvage, marine peril. 4 Salvor, salvage reward, saving lives. 5 Wreck removal. 6 Classification of marine salvage, pure salvage. 7 Concept of no cure - no pay, contract salvage, Lloyd`s Standard Form (LOF). 8 Mid Term Exam. 9 Marine salvage and environment. 10 International Salvage Conventions. 11 Modern marine salvage, special compensation, Special Compensation P&I Club (SCOPIC Clause) . 12 Emergency response, parties involved in marine salvage, International Salvage Union (ISU), P&I Clubs, Cost Guard, Navy, marine salvage in Turkey. 13 Marine salvage engineering, salvage master. 14 Salvage diver, marine salvage equipment. 15 General Evaluation. 16 Final Exam.
