Course Objective

This course provides students insights regarding key concepts, theoretical perspectives, essential skills and abilities, and critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary for effective crisis management within maritime organizations. Topics will include issues management, risk management, relationship management, crisis planning and preparation, case studies, and developing crisis communication management plans.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Demonstrate an appreciation for and understanding of the key concepts and approaches for effectively managing crises in organizations.
2   Be able to explain the role of issues management, risk management, and relationship management in crisis prevention.
3   Demonstrate the ability to construct a crisis management plan.
4   Demonstrate the ability to assess the information needs and resources of a crisis situation through analysis of case studies and other crisis scenarios.
5   Be able to analise of crisis effects on safety, security and environment in maritime organizations

2 Definition of crisis, history and case studies, causes of crisis
3 Crisis types, crisis process, a case study
4 Pre-crisis management
5 Crisis management in time of crisis
6 Post-crisis management, response process to crisis
7 New media in crisis communication
8 Signal detection: The role of issues management, risk management, relationship management and other theoretical perspectives.
9 First journal article review due
10 Crisis preparation, planning. Case Study.
11 The crisis management plan and team in maritime sector. Discussing team projects.
12 Leadership and organizational culture in the crisis management process.
13 Second journal article review due.
14 Processing information in a crisis, crisis response, working with the media. Team meetings. Post-crisis: Evaluation and recovery
