Course Objective

The learning objectives of a Maritime English course are specifically tailored to meet the communication needs of professionals in the maritime industry. These objectives are designed to ensure that mariners can effectively communicate in English, which is the internationally recognized language of the sea. Adequate knowledge of written and spoken English to:
- Understand charts, nautical publications, meteorological information
- Read and understand technical publications
- Understand messages and communications concerning the ships safety in general.
- Communicate with other ships, coast stations and multilingual crew.
- Use and understand the IMO SMCP phrases.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Proficiency in Maritime Terminology: Students will be able to understand and use essential maritime terminology accurately in appropriate contexts, including terminology related to navigation, safety, engineering, meteorology, and maritime operations.
2   Effective Communication: Graduates will be skilled in effective verbal and written communication in English, tailored to maritime contexts. This includes the ability to convey and interpret messages clearly, give and follow instructions, and engage in dialogues pertinent to maritime operations.
3   Understanding of Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP): Students will gain familiarity with and the ability to use IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases, enhancing their ability to communicate in routine, safety-related, and emergency situations at sea.
4   Operational Competence: Learners will be able to discuss and report on operational matters, including navigation, ship handling, cargo operations, and technical issues, using correct English.
5   Safety and Emergency Communication: Participants will develop the skills to communicate effectively in safety drills and real emergency situations, understanding and delivering commands, and information critical to the safety of the ship and crew.
6   Interpretation and Production of Maritime Texts: Students will learn to read and comprehend various types of maritime texts (e.g., manuals, charts, safety plans) and produce written maritime documents (e.g., logs, reports, correspondence) with clarity and accuracy.
7   Cultural and Interpersonal Communication: The course will equip mariners with the skills to navigate intercultural interactions, recognizing the importance of cultural awareness in communication and fostering effective teamwork in a multicultural maritime environment.
8   Regulatory Compliance: Graduates will understand the language of maritime regulations, conventions, and guidelines, ensuring they can comply with international standards and effectively communicate in regulatory contexts.
9   Listening and Comprehension: Learners will improve their ability to comprehend spoken English across various accents and dialects commonly encountered in the maritime industry, enhancing their listening skills in operational and safety-related contexts.
10   Continuous Learning: Encourage ongoing learning and adaptation of language skills to meet evolving industry standards and practices, fostering a commitment to professional development in English language proficiency.
