Course Objective

A course examining Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations in the Aegean Basin during the IIIrd and IInd Millenia B.C.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, student will gain following competences: evaluating the idea about the principal working areas of the archaeological sciences,
2   Describing Minoan and Mycenaean archaeology which are fundamental for general Classical Archaeology,
3   Defining the ancient geography of Aegean Basin,
4   Identification of Aegean prehistory and protohistory,
5   Distinguishing interregional exchanges in archaeology.

1 Geography and topography of Aegean Basin.
2 Terminology.
3 Archaeology of the Aegean Basin from Paleolithic to Bronze Ages.
4 Archaeology of the Aegean Basin in the Early Bronze Age.
5 Beginning of Minoan Civilization.
6 Field Work I: Archaeological Museum of Izmir as well as Museum of History and Art of Izmir.
7 Minoan Ceramics.
8 Midterm exam.
9 Beginning of Mycenaean Civilization.
10 Mycenaean Ceramics.
11 Mycenae and Tiryns.
12 Mycenaean Expansion and Late Bronze Age collapse.
13 Field Work II: Höyüks of Izmir.
14 Evolution of classes
15 Preparation for the exam
16 Final exam
