Course Objective

The purpose of this course in basic electricity and magnetism is to give students some ideas that will assist their learning. Specific suggestions on how to use the textbook will follow a brief discussion of general study habits and strategies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

Describes the nature of electrical charges and how they behave in conductors and insulators
Calculates electric force using Coulomb's law
Uses electric field lines to describe and interpret electric fields
Calculates the electric field of various symmetrical charge distribution using Gauss's law
Defines electrical potential and can explain the relationships between electric field and electrical force.
Calculates the charge storage capacity and capacity of a capacitor.
Calculates current, equivalent resistance, power and electromotive force in a direct current circuit
Analyze the given circuit using Kirchoff's laws.
Calculates the magnetic force acting on moving charges in a magnetic field.
Calculates the magnetic field of current-carrying wire using Ampere's law.
Defines Maxwell's four basic relations that explain electricity and magnetism.
Designs an experiment involving electric and magnetic concepts.
