Course Objective

To be able to have knowledge about Traditional Turkish Art music history, meter in Turkish music and the structure of makams.

2   Learns the accidentals used in Turkish music and knows the values of comas
3   Knows the names of pitches in Turkish music.
4   Understands the meter in Turkish music.
5   Understands the structure of makams in Turkish music.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Turkish music history.
2 The names of pitches, the values of comas, the symbols of accidentals.
3 Tetrachords in Turkish music.
4 Quintets in Turkish music.
5 The studies about buildings the tetrachords and quintets on variety of pitches.
6 The meters - nim sofyan, semai, sofyan, birleşik nim sofyan, birleşik semai, düyek, yürük semai. Studies on the repertoire.
7 The meters - Türk aksagı, devr-i hindi, devr-i turan, aksak, evfer, oynak, raks, aksagı. Studies on the repertoire.
8 The meters - Türk aksagı, devr-i hindi, devr-i turan, aksak, evfer, oynak, raks, aksagı. Studies on the repertoire.Midterm exam.
9 The meters - aksak semai, lenk fahte, ceng-i harbi. Studies on the repertoire
10 Scale, makam, the characteristics of makam.
11 Cargah makam, rast makam, kürdi makam.
12 Hüseyni makam, uşşak makam, buselik makam, neva makam, karcıgar makamı.
13 Basit suzinak makam, nihavend makam, kürdili hicazkar makam.
14 Hicaz makam, Hümayun makam, uzzal makam, zirgüleli hicaz makam.
15 Final exam.
