Course Objective

The aim of the semantics course is to investigate the semantic properties of languages and to examine the semantic relations at the syntactic and syntactic levels from a linguistic point of view. In the course, the methods developed by different linguists on meaning will be examined and students will be encouraged to explore semantic relations.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To identify semantic characteristics particular to languages
2   To evaluate sense-relations based on paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations
3   To identify semantic relations
4   To define, classify and distinguish sense relations
5   To discuss the de Saussurean principle of sign and Ogden & Richards semiotic triangle in detail
6   To distinguish meaning from concept

Assessment Criteria

The success of the student is determined by the midterm and final exam grades. Apart from this, there is no special evaluation criterion.

Students should be prepared for the topics specified in the syllabus before coming to the classes. Attendance to 70% of the courses is compulsory.
