Course Objective

Teaching what the linguistics is, it's basic concepts and the method for examining the language; having the basic features of human language, object of linguistics, understood; introducing the main linguistics studies from past to present.

2 Linguistics and grammar
3 The history of language studies: ancient Greek, Roman, Medieval, Renaissance periods
4 The history of language studies: the classical period and 19th century language studies
5 Contemporary Linguistics(20th century): Saussure, Chomsky, Benveniste, Martinet, modern linguistics
6 Basic concepts of linguistics: descriptivism; synchronism
7 Basic concepts of linguistics: paradigmatic/ syntagmatic relations, tongue/language/speech
8 General review, Course evaluation, Midterm exam
9 Properties of human language: Cognitive processing system
10 Properties of human language: activity of signification
11 Properties of human language: a formal system
12 Properties of human language: a deformable system
13 Properties of human language: double articulation
14 Final exam
