Course Objective

The aim of this course is to enable the students to acquire the basic terms of linguistics, the structural and functional characteristics of language, the basic fields of research and achievements of linguistics, to provide knowledge, skills, thought and awareness relating to language system.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Ability to acquire the structural and functional characteristics of language, to recognize the importance and the power of word resp. language for the development of human mind.
2   2. Ability to explain the basic terms of linguistics and to compare their relations.
3   3. Ability to acquire the basic knowledge on phonetics and phonology, phonetics of German, phonetic script, International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), phonetic script of German words, to write words in phonetic script
4   4. Ability to explain the basic terms of morphology, the classification and types of morpheme and to segment words in morpheme
5   5. Ability to acquire the basic terms and methods of structuralism
6   6. Ability to comprehend the development history of linguistics, to recognize the family of Indo-European and Germanic languages
7   7. Ability to explain the typological classification of languages

1 The structural and functional characteristics of language F. de Saussure and structuralism
2 The importance and the power of word resp. language for the development of human mind and aphorisms on language The basic terms and methods of structuralism, synchrony-diachrony, deskriptiv-präskriptiv, syntagmatic-paradigmatic
3 Wilhelm von Humboldt's view of language, Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, the relation between language and thought The development history of linguistics/ The typological classification of languages
4 Phonetics and the main research areas of phonetics The historical-comparative linguistics, the family of Indo-European and Germanic languages
5 Phonetic script International Phonetic Alphabet Final Exam
6 Characteristics of the consonants and vowels in German language
7 Phonetics of German, phonetic script of German words, to write words in phonetic script
8 Course Overview, Course Evaluation, Midterm Exam
9 The basic terms of morphology, the classification and types of morpheme and to segment words in morpheme
