Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to explain prospective physics teachers about general optics subjects by using both ray diagrams and the wave model of light and to make conceptualize their application.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to describe fundamental concepts and theories of optics 2   To be able to comprehend the concept of ray and its usage in geometrical optics 3   To be able to explain the physical optics events by using the wave model of light 4   To be able to explain the light events in daily life by using the principles of optics 5   To be able to comprehend the features of optical deviceses and the technological application of this deviceses

Course Contents

Week Subject Description 1 The nature of the light, Light rays, ray diagrams in geometric optics, the spread of light and lightening, light-matter interactions, reflection and refraction of light, scattering of light. 2 Huygens principle, geometric optics rules, reflection from plane and spherical surfaces,image formation by spherical mirrors, refraction by the converging and diverging lenses, image formation by the lenses,image formation by the refraction. Spherical and cylindirical lenses 3 explain reflection and refraction by the Fermat principle, Optical instruments 4 Prisms and the amount of shear in a parallel sided glass 5 The wave nature of light and the determination of the wavelength 6 LASER rays 7 Reflection, transition and, absorbtion of white light from colered objects. 8 Course overview, course evaluation,midterm exam 9 Interference of light waves, Young s Double slit experiment, phasor sum of the waves 10 phase change in the reflection, thin films interference 11 introduction to diffraction, scaterring of the light, polarization of light waves 12 Michelson interferometer. 13 Double slit diffraction, diffraction grating 14 Technological aplication, imaging techniques ( ultrasonography, tomography, magnetic rezonance) fiberoptic and applications 15 Final Exam
