Course Objective

The objective of this course is to introduce and teach students eletric and magnetism topics and through laboratory experiments help students compare and develop a sense of understanding relationship between theory and application.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Teaches basic topics and principles of electricity and magnetism reasonably and clearly to students
2   Understands and explains the applications of laws and principles learned in this course according to scientific principles
3   Establishes relationship among topics of this course in daily life and when seen in scientific applications/work places
4   Evaluates and analyses experimental results related to electricity and magnetism topics
5   Demonstrates required skills and knowledge in using experimental methods and data analysis techniques related to topics in this course
6   Desings experiments to solve problems related to electricity and magnetism topics

1 Meeting-Course and laboratory introduction Electric charge and its conservation, charged particles, insulators and conductors
2 Coulomb s Law, electtric field of point charge and continues charge distributions Laboratory experiment about electrostatics
3 Gauss s Law Laboratory experiment about electric fields
4 Electrostatic potential energy (potential of point charge and continues charge distributions, potential difference) Laboratory experiment about electric potential
5 Electrostatic potential energy (dielectrics, capacitors in series and in parallel, energy stored in a capacitor) electrostatic potential energy-experimenting with capacitors
6 Direct current (current, power sources, emf, resistors, energy and power) Conducting experiment in parallel and series circuits
7 Direct current (direct-current circuits, structure of measurement tools, using electricity and safety) Conducting experiment about measurement tools in parallel and series circuits
8 Course overview, evaluation, and midterm exam
9 Magnetic field and force (current carrying conductors, moving charges in magnetic field, the Biot-Savart Law) Experimenting in magnetic fields-magnets
10 Hall Effect, magnetic properties of matter Conducting experiment related to magnetic field lines
11 Electromagnetic induction (Faraday s Law, Lenz Law) Experimenting in Faraday s Law of Induction
12 Electromagnetic induction (self-inductance, energy in magnetic field, alternating current (AC) power supplies, electric motors, transformers) Conducting experiment in electromagnets and transformers
13 Heat and temperature, thermal properties of matter (specific heat, heat capacity, thermal expansion) Experimenting in thermal properties of matters
14 Laws of thermodynamics, reversible and irreversible processes, efficieny and entropy Experimenting in thermal expansion

* The instructor has right to make quizzes. The scores obtained from quizzes may be added to midterm and final grades.
