Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide the students with the knowledge of pitch and beat sequences in Turkish Traditional Art Music in a historical context. Comparisons with current productions will be done and listening examples will be given to provide musicological value.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:Learn the history behind pitch and beat structures of Turkish Traditional Art Music,
2   Do comperative analysis of historical compositions,
3   Understand maqam structure and the historical changes in maqam concept,
4   Understand maqam configurations and realizations,
5   Discriminate the maqam and beat tastes of historical periods.

The students will actively participate the subjects and repertoire, application techniques, auralization tendencies, aesthetical changes and their impacts on technique will be discussed.
