Course Objective

The objective of this course is for students to be able to recognize the history of music with socio-cultural aspect

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Defining romanticism (etymology), romantic literature ve influences (Goethe), the profile of romantic composer (Berlioz, Schumann, Mendelssohnn, Chopin, Liszt, Wagner)
2 Program music in romantic era and musical genres (symphony, symphonic poem, opera, character piece, concert etude).
3 Piano and virtuosity: Paganini and Liszt.
4 Age of Revolution and Nationalism.
5 Wagner and opera.
6 The late romanticism and impressionism.
7 Fin de siecle: the effects of 19th century and 20th century.
8 New in literature, theatre, painting and cinema.
9 Second Viennese School: serial music and dodecaphony.
10 Futurism, bruitism (Russolo-Varese), polytonality and microtonality.
11 Ives, Satie and les Six.
12 Darmstadt: a new era and John Cage.
13 Aesthetic problems in 20th century music and te last word.
14 Mid-term exam
