Course Objective

Aim of the course is inform the students about historical developing of musicology and methods of generation of scientific information.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe the historical development of musicology,
2   Define the working areas in musicology,
3   Describe the theoric, scientific and operative concepts and terminology about musicology ,
4   Describe the basic methods and approaches to generate of scientific information,
5   Define the disciplines as part of musicology and describe to theoric and operative differences between them.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction and inform about musicology.
2 "Scince" and generating of scientific information.
3 Concept of "knowledge" and discussion of knowledge: humanistic perspective and scientific perspective.
4 The standarts of science: generate information of objective, logical, dependable and based upon methodology.
5 What is the scientific music research History of scientific music research. Emergence of musicology and embodiment of musicology.
6 Classification of Adler.
7 The other disciplines as part of Musicology: Historical musicology, ethnomusicology and systematic musicology.
8 Concept, model, theory and paradigm.
9 Midterm exam.
10 Subjectiveness, integrated approach, qualitative analyse and quantitative analyse.
11 Colonialism and effects on social sciences.
12 Historicism and evolutionism on the music research.
13 Functionalism and structuralism
14 Working areas of musicology.
