Course Objective

To teach students about the writers of Russian literature of the second half of the 19th century and their literary works.

1   1. Learn about historical and cultural environment of Russia in the second half of the 19th century
2   2. Learn about the authors of Russian literature of the second half of the 19th century and their literary works
3   3. Understand basic concepts and terms of the literature of the second half of the 19th century
4   4. Learn about literary criticism of the second half of the 19th century
5   5. Gains the ability to distinguish between literary discourse and didactic discourse.

1 1. Information about social events and current of thought in Russia in the second half of the 19th century. 11. Nikolai Gavrilovich Chernyshevsky. Biography and literary works. Analysis of the novel. What Is to Be Done.
2 2. Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov. Biography and literary works. Analysis of the literary work Oblomov . 12. Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. Biography and literary works. Analysis of the novel "War and Peace".
3 3. Aleksandr Ivanovich Herzen. Biography and literary works. Analysis of the literary work Who Is to Blame. 13. Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. Analysis of the novel "Anna Karenina" .
4 4. Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev. Biography and literary works. Analysis of the literary works. "Rudin", "First Love", "On the Eve". 14. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. Biography and literary works. Analysis of literary works.
