Course Objective

To understand open-pit design, production and excavation method applications and to learning underground mining methods.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To know the basic operations in open-pit mine.
2   May do machinery and equipment selection depending on open pit production method or rock feature.
3   To know the pretreatment before selection of underground excavation method.
4   To know underground mining methods and their application conditions.
5   May do machinery and equipment capacity calculations.

1 The objectives of open-pit planning and important factors
2 The open-pit geometry, slope angles and design of excavation parameters
3 Selection criteria of an open-pit excavation and loading machines
4 Determination of the operating parameters for machine and equipment selections in an open pit
5 Work conditions of excavator, dragline, bucket wheel excavator and their selection criteria
6 Project examples for open-pit machinery and equipment selection
7 Mid-term exam
8 Classification of underground mining methods
9 Long-wall mining method
10 Room and Pillar method
11 Sublevel caving methods
12 Production method in blocks
13 Examining the factors affecting on selection of underground mining methods
14 Analysing decision about underground mining depth

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This lecture is going to make with theoretical courses in class, laboratory works and field trips. Instructor is going to teach the lessons with slide shows, create a discussion area with question and answer method with students and make laboratory works
on specific subjects.
