Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the concept, criterium, rules, laws and resolutions of the conservation conception, and to have the students realize these in life. Furthermore, we aim to describe the theories and rules of projects and practices which are necessary for professional fields.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   comprehend the development of the conservation concept applied in the world,
2   determine the limited criterium concepts of conservation works,
3   comprehend the documentation stages necessary before conservation and repair works,
4   learn the correlation between conservation and repair, and the differences between practices, and define the process stages correctly,
5   have the knowledge to define all concepts existing in the range from pre and after restoration faults to reconstruction.

1 The development of conservation idea and its theoretical basis
2 The concern about style unity and romantic vision
3 The study of historical restoration and contemporary restoration theories
4 Defining the merits to be conserved, and the definition of movable immovable cultural and natural merits
5 Conservation criterium and criteria for evaluation
6 The study for interior factors of failures
7 The study for external factors of failures
8 The basic factors of historical environment, the evolution of conservation concept
9 The basic factors of historical environment and its being deteriorated
10 Conservation plans for historical environment
11 International organization for conservation and resolutions
12 International legislations for conservation
13 Local and regional organization, studies, practices, controls and sanctions related to the laws and resolutions about conservation

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1- Lessons;
The instructor guides the students to follow the studies made by practising the conservation and restoration concepts consciously; and, teaches them how to make documentations and suggestions without any fault. The aim of this course is to have the students comprehend the documentation stages for conservation and repair works, and gain the knowledge to prepare the infra-structure for defining practice differences, process stages, failures and redo methods correctly.
2- Revising sessions and in-class discussions;
The techniques for media documentation given by the instructor and the information given by the documents, in-class discussions are supported by assignments and presentations.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

The students will be evaluated and graded by their attendance, contribution to the course, skills to define the subjects, participating the analyzing discussions and the quality of their assignments, being conscious of subject sensitivity and its conservation.

Assessment Criteria

The grading is based on the students attendance by having done preliminary survey, their participation into the solutions and suggestions sensibly, the suitability of their solution suggestions, the complementation of conservation anticipations, and their applications.
Student studies will be evaluated by considering their learning and using the illumination conservation, by the content of assignments and projects and the quality of presentation, the applications of suggestions.

Every plagiarism attempt and act will be considered as a disciplinary action.
Any kind of vandalism attempt and act for historical artefacts will be considered as a disciplinary action.
If submitted later than deadlines, the projects and homework will not be evaluated, or out of 100
