Course Objective

To acquire knowledge and skills on the structure of the immune system, its functions and basic principles of imminology, the basic elements and mechanisms of immunity, immune mechanisms that play a role in disease prevention, and serological diagnostic methods

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Knows the basic structure and functions of the immune system and the importance of immune responses developing in the organism, the structure, classes, properties and functions of antibodies and antibody responses in the host
2   Knows primary and secondary lymphoid organs, immune system cells, non-specific defense mechanism of the body, monoclonal antibodies and immune toxins in mammals and poultry
3   Has knowledge about the immune system, passive, active and mucosal immune mechanisms, complement system in pets and blood groups in newborn animals
4   Knows hypersensitivity reactions, tumor immunology, transplantation immunology, MHC genes and reproductive immunology
5   Learning the basic mechanism of antigen-antibody reactions, performs serological tests based on this basis, interpret the results according to the purpose

Course Contents

1 Basic concepts and definitions in immunology, natural resistance, nonspecific immunity, specific immunity and basic properties, antigen, conditions determining antigenicity
2 Immune system cells, surface molecules, their role in immune response
3 Immunoglobulin structure, antibodies, antigen receptors, antigen-antibody reactions
4 Basic structures of immunglobulins, heavy and light chain types, classes and functions, antigen-antibody reactions
5 Phagocytosis and phagocytosis cells, macrophage and neutrophil phagocytosis, the importance of phagocytosis in immune response
6 Antigen processing and presentation, the importance of antigen processing and presentation with cells having this function, MHC Class I and MHC Class II molecules in immune response
7 Humoral immune response, conditions in which humoral immunity develops, the importance of B-lymphocytes in humoral immunity, B and T cell cooperation, antibody synthesis and antibody functions
8 Cellular immune response, conditions in which cellular immunity develops, T-cell cytotoxicity, apoptosis, NK (natural killer) cell cytotoxicity, macrophage activation
9 Immunological tolerance and immune response regulation
10 The importance of immunoglobulins (IgA, IgE) in mucosal immunity, immunity in special mucosal systems (digestion, respiration, breast, urogenital and skin)
11 Immunity in infectious diseases
12 Transplantation immunology, tumor immunology
13 Hypersensitivity reactions, types and mechanisms
14 Autoimmunity, immune deficiencies
