Course Objective

To provide students with veterinary medicine the basic biochemistry knowledge and skills necessary for the metabolism of biomolecules, the control path of metabolism, the chemical structures and biological importance of vitamins, the functions of the minerals that play an important role in the organism, and the research and interpretation of the syndromes they cause.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Gains general laboratory knowledge and ability, perform basic biochemical experiments
2   Knows the basic issues related to the metabolism of biomolecules that make up the chemical structures of the living organism.
3   Knows the connections between the metabolic pathways of biomolecules
4   Knows the chemical structure and metabolism of vitamins and mineral substances
5   Has knowledge of metabolism of hormones and lipids
6   Equipped with knowledge of protein and carbohydrate metabolism

Course Contents

1 Carbohydrate Metabolism: glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, control mechanisms of glycolysis, hormonal control of glucose breakdown
2 Carbohydrate Metabolism: gluconeogenesis, anaerobic glycolysis, pentose phosphate pathway, TCA cycle
3 Lipid Metabolism: beta oxidation
4 Lipid Metabolism: biosynthesis
5 Lipid Metabolism: lipoproteins, triacylglycerols, sphingolipids, cholesterol and metabolism
6 Protein Metabolism: protein synthesis and metabolism, nitrogen balance, amino acids
7 Protein Metabolism: amino acid metabolism, general exchange pathways of amino acids, urea cycle
8 Hormones: functions, general properties and synthesis
9 Hormones: hormone-receptor relationship, the mechanism of action of hormones
10 Vitamins: classification, structure, synthesis and biological roles of water-soluble vitamins
11 Vitamins: the structure, synthesis and biological roles of fat-soluble vitamins
12 Bioelements and their metabolism: macro elements
13 Bioelements and their metabolism: trace elements
14 Nucleic acid metabolism
