General Description

History

The development of tourism as a scientific field, which is one of the locomotive sectors of the global economy, is of great importance in terms of strengthening its theoretical infrastructure and being supported by research. The Department of Tourism Management aims to support the scientific development of the tourism sector with the Doctoral Program it has established primarily to train human resources focused on pursuing an academic career. The program aims to provide academic and social environments that will equip individuals aspiring to pursue an academic career with the necessary knowledge through foundational and complementary courses following their master's degree programs. By bringing together students with different backgrounds, including those with experience in various institutions or sectors who wish to transition into academia, the program creates a platform for knowledge exchange and diverse perspectives. In line with this goal, the program is a comprehensive postgraduate program designed to develop students' skills in researching, finding, sharing, and interpreting information, with compulsory and elective courses. Its aim is to cultivate questioning and knowledge-oriented individuals within society.

The Doctoral Program in the Department of Tourism Management contributes not only to students aiming to pursue a doctoral degree but also to the training of academic staff from various universities across Türkiye. The curriculum and course content of the program have been redesigned to meet the needs of the era in line with stakeholder opinions, aiming for students to specialize in a specific area as they progress through the program. The courses are taught in Turkish, and the program also offers students the opportunity for education abroad through Erasmus.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The Tourism Management PhD Program aims to promote the production of scientific knowledge in the field of tourism and strengthen its theoretical infrastructure; to train individuals aiming for an academic career in the tourism sector and increase the number of qualified tourism experts; to equip students with the ability to conduct independent research and provide them with the methodological and analytical skills necessary to solve complex tourism problems; to generate knowledge about current challenges and issues in the tourism industry and offer solutions to these problems; to bring together students from different disciplines and sectors to develop diverse perspectives and solution proposals in the field of tourism; to focus on research and practices aimed at promoting the management of tourism in line with sustainability principles and preserving tourism resources for future generations; to prepare students to take on leadership roles in the tourism sector by providing them with management skills and leadership qualities.

The Tourism Management PhD program is a postgraduate education program aimed at conducting in-depth research on the tourism industry. This program provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to understand and address complex issues in the tourism sector. With its research-oriented approach, this program provides students with training in research skills and methods necessary to investigate current and future topics in the tourism industry. This training enables students to develop their ability to conduct independent research. The program may offer courses covering fundamental topics such as tourism management, tourism marketing, destination management, sustainable tourism, tourism economics, tourism policies, and cultural heritage. Advanced courses allow students to focus on specific areas of interest. Methodology courses, such as research methods and statistics, provide students with the tools needed to conduct scientific research. At the end of the program, there is a thesis project where students identify a research question, develop a research plan, and implement it to answer the question. Seminars, conferences, and workshops are organized for students, providing them with opportunities to interact with experts in the field and exchange knowledge on current topics. Technological support is provided to students with library resources for project and thesis-related work, computer labs for student and class use, and wireless network connectivity. The language of instruction for the courses offered in the program is Turkish.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To be able to acquire scientific thinking, interpret science with critical approach, contribute to science and apply the knowledge of philosophy of science in every aspect of academic life.
2   To be able to acquire contemporary developments in tourism sectors from the point of view of humanities and social sciences (tourism marketing, tourism sociology, management and organization etc.); and to relate to one another, evaluate, and declare an opinion by examining using critical approach in interdisciplinary dimension.
3   To be able to evaluate the problems in the field strategically, foresee strategic solutions providing benefits to stakeholders, evaluate using strategic decision making processes, and take initiative.
4   To be able to analyze and evaluate economics of tourism sectors; and to provide solutions and recommendations to problems encountered.
5   To be able to examine, evaluate and excel contemporary and advanced knowledge in the field of marketing; and to evaluate and synthesize the relationship between marketing and disciplines such as sociology, psychology and management.
6   To be able to collect sectoral data using information technologies; to analyze the data using necessary fundamental statistical knowledge; and to discuss, examine, report, and present results on the field studied by applying advanced research methods.
7   To be able to propose regional plans and policies based on the knowledge of tourism policy and planning
8   To be able to understand the importance sustainable tourism in national development; and to grasp, explain and defend sustainability framework.
9   To be able to grasp functioning of tourism sectors by taking into account of management, marketing, finance, economic and sociological perspectives in a holistic view; and to analyze, evaluate and recommend in any topic related to tourism businesses.

Graduates of the Department of Tourism Management PhD Program mainly serve as faculty members in higher education institutions.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation and assessment methods for each course is defined in the the Course Description Form which is prepared by related faculty member / s and included in the information package. Exams and course success notes is subject to the relevant articles of the DEU Regulation on Graduate Education.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (87 ECTS), a field study (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
