General Description

History

Higher Economy and Trade School, on which contemporary Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences was founded upon, was established on September 9th, 1944. It was renamed as Economic and Commercial Sciences Academy on June 8th, 1959 by the by the Law No. 7334. It was included in Ege University as a faculty in 1968. With the establishment of Dokuz Eylül University by Decree Law No. 41 on the Organization of Higher Education Institutions, it was joined the establishment as Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. Contemporarily, the Faculty consists of seven departments which are Business Administration, Economics, Public Finance, Labour Economics and Industrial Relations, Public Administration, Econometrics and Management Information Systems. All departments have both day and evening formal education programmes.
The Department of Labour Economics and Industrial Relations is an interdisciplinary field of social sciences that studies social policy, labour economics, industrial relations, sociology, psychology, economics, labour law and social security. The existence of our department has begun by the Social Policy Chair founded by Prof.Dr. Muhittin ALAM in the Faculty of Economics and Commercial Sciences in Ege University at 1969. Also, Labour Economics and Industrial Relations (LEIR) Department in Dokuz Eylül University established in 1982. Department has been interdisciplinary character and compatible to composition four sub-disciplines activated which is Labour Economics and Industrial Relations, Law of Labour and Social Security, Management and Work Psychology and also Management and Work Sociology. In addition LEIR has given 5 graduate and one PhD. degree as dependent on Dokuz Eylül University of Social Sciences Institute.

Qualification Awarded

The graduates, who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum of Labour Economics and Industrial Relations Programme, are awarded with the Bachelors Degree in Labour Economics and Industrial Relations.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The rules and regulations for recognition of prior learning for LEIR Programme are in conformance with general requirements of Dokuz Eylül University.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students are required to successfully complete all courses of the programme (equivalent to 240 ECTS total) and obtain a minimum average grade point of 2.00 out of 4.00. In addition, conditions in the relevant articles of the second and fourth parts of the Associate and Bachelors Degree Education and Examination Regulations (https://ogrenci.deu.edu.tr/regulations-and-directives/educational-and-examinational-regulation-of-pre-graduate-and-undergraduate-degree/) should be met.

Profile of the Programme

Undergraduate programme of LEIR has aimed to reach universal and contemporary arguments about social policy area through interdisciplinary perspective. The Departmental courses have an interdisciplinary approach to work and work environment and various disciplines in social sciences such as human resources, social politics, law, economics, sociology, psychology and management. The first two years of the programme offer more general courses from various departments of the Faculty. However, the third and fourth years of study are devoted to specialized departmental courses. Also, there are optional 18 Erasmus courses which are given in English, German and French. In addition, local students can benefit both from Farabi Exchange Program through Turkish Universities and Erasmus exchange Program through European universities for one or two semesters.
In the 2012-2013 Academic Year, Department of LEIR continues education and research activities with an academic staff consists of 11 professors, 2 associate professor, 3 assistant professors and 8 research assistants.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Have fundamental theoretical knowledge related to Economics and Administrative Sciences.
2   Have advanced theoretical and practical knowledge related to social politics; respect social rights; have the ability to develop suggestions for conflicts of interests; put effort on fair distribution of income, ethics and actualizing natural environmental values.
3   Are provided with advanced knowledge relative to human resources processes at macro level and in economic units; demonstrate skills on applying these information and sharing with others using software in the field; can carry out independent studies on utilizing and developing human capital productively and humanely in production processes.
4   Have advanced theoretical, historical, juridical and practical knowledge about industrial relations, contemporary trade unionism and collective agreements; can manage processes with the ability to frame creative social dialogue environments which focus on labour peace; can generate solutions to problems encountered.
5   Are able to use the advanced theoretical and practical knowledge on labour markets and employment in order to analyze and explicate reformations on these fields; to work on labour supply-demand and its planning; to make suggestions to reduce unemployment.
6   Have advanced theoretical and applied knowledge on management and work psychology; are able to work on both labour productivity via analyzing problems and happiness of workers and their personal developments; are able to comment on facts via explaining all dimensions of working life with a psychological approach.
7   Have advanced theoretical and applied knowledge on sociology of management and work; are able to improve solutions, suggestions and vision in order to improve working life and working culture which aim social efficiency and social harmony; are able to comment on facts via explaining every dimensions of working life with a sociological approach.
8   Have theoretical, technical and practical knowledge to protect and improve the health of workers and occupational safety; have a good understanding of health and safety legislation in the field; can evaluate physical and psycho-social risks in the work environment and able to solve problems in accordance with regulations.
9   Can use their theoretical and juridical knowledge about social security; recognize the institutional structures and practices in this area; share information with others; can generate solutions to problems encountered in working life in accordance with legislation
10   Have advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of labor law; can successfully adapt their juridical knowledge to various situations in practice; can take responsibility and generate solutions when encountered with problems; have gained the ability to transmit information to others and help them to develop.
11   Have a command of Turkish language; endeavor to learn at least one foreign language; have self-expression, public speaking, classification, analysis, synthesis, reporting and presentation skills; can assimilate information and publications to generate solutions
12   Have fundamental knowledge about scientific thought and research methods; demonstrate advanced ability to read, learn and research skills; have acquired information literacy skills; can evaluate and interpret facts scientifically with cause-effect analyses.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Students, who take the Labour Economics and Industrial Relations Specialist title, can work in numerous fields of public and private sector. Graduates of the department can be employed in manager positions in human resources or personnel management departments; as trainer or collective bargaining specialist at trade unions; in supervisor position at Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Ministry of Family and Social Policies and dependent institutions; as supervisor, manager or specialist at Turkish Employment Agency, as labour attaché at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as labour and social security specialist in companies giving consultancy and training services. Department graduates are also suitable for employment positions which employ Economics and Administrative Sciences graduates.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates who completed undergraduate programmes requirements successfully can register to second and third cycle pogrammes (masters and doctorate) of national and international higher education institutions if they can meet the related requirements.

Graduation Requirements

Graduation requirements are as described in the Qualification Requirements and Rules section. The requirement for graduation is to complete all of the courses in the programme (equivalent to 240 ECTS total) successfully and to have a CGPA of minimum 2.00 out of 4.00. Also, second and fourth parts of the articles of the conditions in the Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations must be met.
