General Description

History

Department of performing arts objective is to graduate qualified artists needed by the acting, dramatic writing and stage design majors. Aim of the department is bringing the model of graduates with the following abilities: doing an objective research in any subject given, getting to a conclusion by scientific methods with the research result, making an artistic interpretation counting on this result and applying this interpretation to an artistic form.
Performing arts department is founded as the part of the faculty of fine arts which is founded in 1976, structured within Ege University. The department has started education in semester 1976 1977. Acting, dramatıc writing, stage design are the current branches of education. In the year of the fırst graduates, 1981, the department becomes a part of Dokuz Eylul University along with the fine arts faculty founded, as a result of the arrengements done in the Turkish higher education. And it continues functioning eversince.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer students:
For students who wish to transfer from higher education institutions in Türkiye and foreign countries to Dokuz Eylul University, the Regulation on the Principles of Transferring Between Associate Degree and Undergraduate Programs, Double Major, Minor and Inter-Institutional Credit Transfer in Higher Education Institutions and the Evaluation Conditions related to horizontal transfers determined by the Senate of our University are applied.
Horizontal Transfer Quotas are announced by the Council of Higher Education. Evaluation; It is made by the commissions established in faculties and colleges and announced by the relevant boards.

Students coming with Vertical Transfer:
Vertical transfer of graduates of Vocational Schools to undergraduate programs that are the continuation of the fields they have finished; The provisions of the Regulation on the Continuation of Graduates of Vocational Schools and Open Education Associate Degree Programs to Undergraduate Education are applied.
The quotas allocated by the University are notified to ÖSYM Presidency. These quotas and conditions are announced in the Vertical Transfer Guide prepared by ÖSYM.
Placement procedures are carried out centrally by OSYM according to the results of the Vertical Transfer Exam.

According to Dokuz Eylul University Graduate Education and Training Regulations, students are not admitted to the programs affiliated to the Graduate Schools by lateral transfer. Based on the student's petition regarding which of the courses that the student has taken and succeeded while enrolled in the graduate program of another university will be counted from the minimum course load after enrolling in the same graduate program at Dokuz Eylül, the application showing the course contents and transcript chart is determined by the recommendation of the advisor, the opinion of the head of the department and the decision of the institute board of directors. The courses taken by students participating in exchange programs from the opposite university are accepted as elective or compulsory courses.

An undergraduate transfer to the faculty is applied within the meritorious regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 27561 dated 24.4.2010 about: transfers between associate degree programs and undergraduate programs, double major, lateral branch and interinstitutional credit transfer making.
In the vertical transfers; the regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 24676 dated 19.2.2002 about: undergraduate education attendance of graduates of vocational high school and open-university associate degree program is applied.
Within the transfer of students who did not or could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational high schools; the regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 20112 dated 18.3.1989 about getting associate diploma or adaptation of students who did not or could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational high schools is applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.
1- Training is performed based on course passing system in faculty.
2- Failed courses belong to an academic year are firstly enrolled next academic year.
3- Absolute assessment system is applied in faculty.
4- Grade point avarage (GPA) ; it is calculated by dividing the number which is found by multiplying course credits with marks to total credit in relevant term.
5- General Grade point avarage (GGPA) ; it covers the whole courses and education period so far and is calculated by dividing the number which is found by multiplying all course credits with marks to total credit.
6- Only enrolled courses are taken into consideration in GPA and GGPA calculation, the courses which can not be attend are omitted. The last mark is considered for repeated courses. In average calculation, two decimal after comma is used.
7- The last mark gained for repeated courses is passing mark. Whether have been taking course addition to maximum load not exceedingly two courses or not and its conditions are determined by Faculy Administrative Board. The student must complete 4years of study acquiring 240 (ECTS )credits. At least 60 ECTS of 240 ECTS credits must have been electives courses. This degree is awarded to students who have successfuly completed all courses in the curriculum, 50 days of internship, Graduation project and have a minimum CGPA of 50/100 and no failing grades.

Profile of the Programme

Performing Arts program aims to provide an education program to train intellectual, creative and productive performing arts theorists, critics, playwrights and dramaturgs as well as competent art directors, costume, lighting and make-up designers and puppeteers who will create dramatic repertoire including stage, screen, radio and commercials with the necessary courses including the principles that will form the basic qualifications on the theory of stage acting.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Having the theoretical and academic knowledge about general Performing Arts and art fields, Acting, Design, Playwriting/ Dramaturgy.
2   Having sufficient technical knowledge and equipment in practice and knowledge about basic acting, Design, Playwriting/ Dramaturgy, the fields of the Performing Arts.
3   Using theoretical information along with the information gained from the fields of practice, in the field of Performing Arts
4   Possessing the artistic and cultural information accumulated, in order to form a Performing Arts basis.
5   Possessing the knowledge over innovative, contemporary approaches within Performing Arts.
6   Being able to develop special talents in the field of acting.
7   Having the knowledge of information and communication technology, as well as computer software about Stage, Lighting, Decor, Costume; and also the common technical equipment of field. Being able to utilise those during a process of designing and producing.
8   Possessing the ability to create represent stage creative, unique, innovative practices, plays carrying aesthetic values.
9   Being able to bring together the practices and their audience, using the theoretical information acquired in th field of Performing Arts.
10   Having the ability to solve problems during design and producing levels; also having a critical point of view and generating solutions/being analitical.
11   Being capable of using contemporary approaches and equipments for the practices in the fileld of Performing Arts.
12   Being able to use different methods of the field, for practices and design.
13   Being able to take responsibilities as an individual, make decisions; having skills to manage and direct individuals and teams; working productively with others and alone, both in the field and in interdisciplinary area.
14   Having the competence to present the progress of scientific research and its result, through various kinds of visual and deictic/illustrative media like role, stage, essay, thesis, notice.
15   Having the ability to analyze a play, a text; write a new play, text; design a stage; try acting methods; and also take part in researches done in those areas.
16   Having the knowledge of entrepreneurship without any trading worries or any concern about popularity. Being able to take risks.
17   Being capable of verbal and written communication; planning time, possessing efficient time management skills.
18   Being able to improve oneself by following the developments about science, art, design, technology and contemporary issues; internalizing life-long learning and its significance.
19   Having a degree of B1 at least in a foreign language, and having the ability of using it in both written and verbal communicating.
20   Graduating students with social and scientific ethical values.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Acting program graduates are employed as actors in state theater, municipal theater, etc. Subsidized theaters, private theaters, tv series and advertisement sector.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Faculty of Fine Arts Educational and Examinational Regulations. The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is 50. Detailed assessment methods and criteria for courses are explained in syllabi.

Graduation Requirements

A student is required to have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 50/100 and no failing grades.
A student is required to have minimum 240 credits of ECTS in total.
A student is required to complete the field internships in designated terms and hours
A student is required to complete a Diploma Project covering the necessary acedemic research and artistic production.
