General Description

History

The importance of working with regard to occupational health and safety regulations stated in management systems is revealed in both government and private sectors. The up to date occupational health and safety regulation in Türkiye suggests occupational safety focused applications. The increase in the number of occupational health and safety specialist would provide the mentioned applications. Therefore, the Occupational Health and Safety Department is established in 2014 under the management of The Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences in Dokuz Eylül University with thesis and non-thesis educational programmes.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

2 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Occupational Health and Safety is an interdisciplinary program. The aim of this program is to provide the opportunity of qualifying as Master of Science for graduate students and people who are already practicing their profession. The culture of occupational health and safety with proactive approach will be provided to students by the applied education and training.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   They have comprehensive and up to date information on workplace environmental factors, working conditions and protection principles.
2   They know the Occupational Health and Safety legislation; they follow it to stay up to date.
3   They have knowledge on risk analysis.
4   They have knowledge on research methods and statistical methods used in researches on Occupational Health and Safety.
5   They have ability to identify employees' health and safety problems, generate solutions, develop, implement and evaluate programs with their acquired knowledge and skills on Occupational Health and Safety by using appropriate tools and methods.
6   They have knowledge about personal protective equipment used in Occupational Health and Safety.
7   They understand the interdisciplinary interaction on Occupational Health and Safety, join the teamwork and share information on detection and solution of the problems of the field.
8   They behave in accordance with the principles of scientific and professional ethics on their studies on Occupational Health and Safety and on all of their academic studies.
9   They make researches and presentations on the priority issues of Occupational Health and Safety and prepare reports.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The certificate of occupational health and safety specialist is classified into three such as less dangerous occupations (C), dangerous occupations (B) and highly dangerous occupations (A). The technical specialist with these certificates has the privilege to work in government and public sector. According to up to date regulations, the people with Master of Science degree in Occupational Health and Safety Programme and the people with Ph.D. degree in Occupational Health and Safety Programme deserve the right to directly participate the test for occupational health and safety specialist certificate.

If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities).

Related items of Dokuz Eylul University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades.
The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS), M. Sc. Research (3 ECTS) and M. Sc. Thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
