General Description

History

Department of Philosophy has started its undergraduate program at academic year 2011-2012. The department of philosophy conducts research and teaching in all major disciplines of philosophy.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

In Turkish Higher Education institutions, the recognition of previous formal education and lateral and vertical transfers and transfers within the university are carried out within the scope of the assessment criteria determined by the Senate of our University and the REGULATION ON THE PRINCIPLES CONCERNING TRANSFER, DOUBLE MAJOR, MINOR AND CREDIT TRANSFER BETWEEN INSTITUTIONS AT UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION AND UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL.
(1) In lateral transfers to the Faculty of Letters, the provisions of the Regulation on the Principles Concerning Transfer, Double Major, Minor and Credit Transfer between Institutions at Upper Secondary Education and Undergraduate Level, published in the Official Gazzette dated 24/4/2010 No. 27561.
(2) In vertical transfers to the Faculty of Letters, the provisions of the Regulation on the Continuation of Graduates of Vocational Schools and Open Learning Upper Secondary Education with Undergraduate Programs, published in the Official Gazzette dated 19/2/2002 and No. 24676.
(3) In the transfers of those who completed or those who could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational schools, the provisions of the Regulation on Awarding Upper Secondary Education Diploma to those who could or could not complete their Undergraduate Education or Adjustment of those who could or could not complete their Undergraduate Education to Vocational Schools, published in the Official Gazzette dated 18/3/1989 and No. 20112.
In Türkiye, the recognition of in-formal and non-formal education is yet on the onset. Therefore, the recognition of previous education has not been fully initiated in all programs at Dokuz Eylul University. However, if the student has successfully completed some of the courses in the program in the institutions where s/he previously studied, s/he can be exempted from all or some of these courses in line with the opinion of the adjustment commission.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.In order for students to complete their education successfully in our faculty, their GPA (Grade Point Average) should be at least 2.00. Final year students who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 are entitled to take a one-course examination in order to increase the GPA if they are able to fulfil the condition of a GPA of 2.00 from the courses included in the program of the last four semesters. Those who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 through one-course examination are entitled to take a mid-term exam, final exam or make-up exam from the courses of the last four semesters. The students benefit from this right of examination in the exam period during the semester in which the courses are opened. The students who would like to benefit from this right of examination declare the exams that they will take at the beginning of the semester during registration.
In order to graduate from Department of Philosophy, to successfully complete all the courses (equivalent to 240 ECTS) included in the program and to acquire at least 2.00 GPA (grade points average) on a 4.00 scale are the essential conditions for qualification.

Profile of the Programme

4 year undergraduate program of Department of Philosophy, consists 8 semesters. The official language of education is Turkish. Students, who provide the specific conditions, have the opportunity to make minor and double major at the Departments of Archeology and Linguistics. 1   Being able to define basic concepts, questions and problems of various disciplines of philosophy.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

This degree enables the holder to exercise the profession in the public or private enterprises. Graduates may be employed by various public institutions such as Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, Social Services and etc., private educational institutions, Psychotechnic Evaluation Centres and Industrial establishments. Graduate students can get certificate of formation in order to teach at public and private institutions. Moreover, they may proceed with their careers in the academic field (Master and Doctoral level) and go on with their scientific researches under the umbrella of the university.

Access to Further Studies

The students who have completed their undergraduate education successfully can continue their studies in graduate programs (second cycle) in their own field or related fields provided that they pass the examination ALES and have sufficient knowledge of English.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In the curriculum of Department of Philosophys academic program, courses corresponding to a total of 240 ECTS are presented to students. Students has to take 33 required and 18 elective courses in order to complete the program successfully. Required courses include mutual required courses taught in the university (7), Department of Philosophys required courses (18) along with the required courses (8) from the Departments of Psychology and Sociology. 12 of the elective courses are labelled as departmental elective courses and 6 of them are labelled as non-departmental elective courses. Students departmental elective courses are indicated at each semesters curriculum. Students are free to choose their non-departmental courses either from other departments at the faculty or from departments at other faculties.

Graduation Requirements

Student has to complete required and elective courses (equivalent to 240 ECTS) which stated under the topic of Course Structure Diagram with Credits and to acquire at least 2.00 GPA (grade points average) on a 4.00 scale.
