General Description

History

In 1973, the idea of Marine Research in the Aegean University, "Multidisciplinary Research Program for Regional Development" started in the framework of the ship and marine laboratory equipment required for data collection efforts has been the establishment in question. The Institute was established depending on the University of the Aegean on 14/10/1975, and connected to the Dokuz Eylul University in 1982.
The purpose of the establishment and the activity range was determined as follows:
* Marine Geology and Geophysics seabed with the possibility of economic mineral deposits and petroleum research and technology
* Marine discharges and technology in terms of marine chemistry and environmental engineering
* Physical oceanography and marine mechanics, wave mechanics
* Coastal and coastal structures engineering and technology
* Marine mapping and bathymetry
* Marine equipment technology
* Marine technology and economics of the legal issues related to it
* Marine structures and technology

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

2 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The primary interests of Marine Living Resources are marine ecosystems, marine organisms distribution and their relationships with each other and their surroundings. In this context, our institution carries out the investigation of the biological and ecological characteristics of many species, populations and communities in different scales such as individual by performing autoecologic, sinecologic and demecologic studies in our seas starting from the most primitive single-celled organisms up to the most advanced of marine mammals. After identification, several studies can be carried out in order to monitor and protect the biodersity in our seas. Identifying, monitoring and assessment studies for impacts caused by natural events or human impact on marine and coastal areas. In addition to these studies, the effects of climate changes on the marine ecosystem, indicators, alien and invasive species, pollution sources and effects, determination of fisheries resources, stock prediction and management, sustainable use of stocks, our current fisheries policies in dealing with challenges such as the production and investigation of the environmental impact of aquaculture on issues being studied.
In the research;
* Trawlers, beam trawlers, IKMT (Isaac Kidd Midwater Trawl), Van Veen grab, Orange-peel, Box-corer, Drej, different types of plankton nets, Nansen, and sampling tools and systems such as the Rosette-Sampler,
* CTD profile devices, current meter and the discharge profile devices, photosynthetic light meter, Sidescan Echo Sounder, Scientific Echo Sounder and physical measuring devices, such as Net Sounder,
* Atomic, UV and Mass Spectrophotometer, measuring nutrient auto-analyzer, PCR, electrophoresis, gas and chemical measuring devices such as liquid chromatography,
* A variety of image registration system steoro-microscope, phase contrast, light and epifloresan microscopes are used.
Evaluation of the data obtained was subjected to analysis of spatial, Geographical Information Systems and remote sensing applications that allow Matlab, Foxpro, ArcGIS,
Erdas, Idrisi, MapViewer, Ocean Data View, and so on., software can be utilized. Physical oceanographic models (Killworth model with the help of Princeton MSDEW other software, MIKADO, NEMO, etc.) have been used in the analysis of hydrographic characteristics of the study area.

6   Demonstrates a high level of competence working individually, making independent decisions and communicating ideas proficiently both orally and in written form.
7   Assumes the professional and ethical responsibilities of the profession.
8   Stays up-to-date on national and international advances, developments and problems in marine research and strives to continuously learn and develop as a professional within the field.

The students who have graduated from the Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology can work in government corporations, as academicians and in several institutes and companies.

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities). It is obligatory to register MAT5101 Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) or MAT5102 Numerical and Approximate Methods (3 0 0) or MAT5141 Mathematical Mehods (3 0 0) with approval of the supervisor. The registration must be noticed to the Institute during course registration period by the supervisor.

Related items of Dokuz Eylul University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS), M. Sc. Research (3 ECTS) and M. Sc. Thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
