Course Objective

The ecosystem approach is a tool for the integrated management of such human activities as aquaculture. This strategy is based on the balance protection of all living resources on land and in the water. The course is focused on the environmental, socio-economic and governance dimensions of aquaculture. Among the subjects that form the basis of the ecosystem approach to aquaculture are biology and ecology. The deployment of best practice zoo-technological information concerning the farmed species is of basic importance. Relevant production techniques and methods will be taught throughout the course. Management strategies, indicators and the bottlenecks in the development of the aquaculture sector will also be analyzed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The course will help develop an awareness of the ecosystem approach to aquacultural management strategies at farm and sectoral level. The optimal use of the goods and services of the natural environment without damage is fundamental.
2   The integration of coastal zone aquaculture with the activities of other users such as tourism, fisheries, restricted urban development and wetlands preservation through the application of GIS tools will be examined by reference to case studies.
3   The ecosystem approach to aquaculture will focus on the deployment of carrying capacity models and indicators. It will carefully consider the processes required for the establishment and monitoring of programs and tools in order to help decision making.
4   For the purpose of a potential career in aquaculture, this course is designed to help the student to gain insight into a number of relevant matters and the development of his/her analytical abilities by the relative assessment of different projects.
5   The course will provide students further training on the application of research tools. They will be guided as to how to undertake research and on the processes required to gain an insight on the design of methods to be used in the field of marine aquaculture.
6   Transferring information to gain experience by offering prepared during the course topics
7   When using written sources during the processing of a variety of topics (eg.article,book,projects,etc.) scientific papers,reports,software to be knowledgeable about.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods


The course is taught in a interactive manner with a short class presentation and discussion format. Field visits to fish farms and fisheries and other coastal zone stake holdings will take place. All class members are expected to attend regularly and take a full part in the presentations and discussions. The preparation of an on-going thematic folder will be required for assessment. A formal written examination will take place at the end of the semester.
