General Description

History

The Oral and Dental Health Program was established within the Dokuz Eylül University Vocational School of Health Services during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Program Description:
The aim of the program is to train "Oral and Dental Health Technicians" who will prepare the necessary environment for all clinical work of dentists in dental clinics, public hospitals, and Oral and Dental Health centers, or private dental polyclinics. These technicians will assist dentists during patient treatment, take responsibility for patient admissions, work well within a team, and adhere to professional ethical rules while possessing technical knowledge. The program seeks to play a leading role in training Oral and Dental Health Technicians who follow all innovations and developments in the field of Oral and Dental Health and Dentistry, gaining superior skills and competence.

Program Curriculum:
The language of instruction for the Oral and Dental Health Program is Turkish. It offers formal education.
Student competencies are assessed through theoretical exams, term assignments, and clinical practices.
Throughout their studies, students in the Oral and Dental Health Program benefit from the laboratories available within our school. Our university provides an adequate computer environment supported by internet access, open for student use. Dokuz Eylül University's library is well-equipped with resources and data for education, teaching, and research.

Additionally, our university offers a wide range of recreational opportunities where students can participate in social, cultural, and sports activities during their free time. The Oral and Dental Health Program also provides access to a broad collection of books, journals, and e-databases for students, whether for meeting academic needs or conducting in-depth research. Furthermore, high-tech computers are available for student use.

Specific Admission Requirements

Vocational high school diploma or high school diploma, placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Students who have previously studied in the same program at another university may transfer the credits of the courses they have completed. Credit transfers are subject to the recommendation of the Program Chair and the approval of the Directorate of the Vocational School of Health Services.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The program duration is 2 years, consisting of 2 semesters per year, with each semester spanning 16 weeks of courses.
To graduate from the program, students must complete a total of 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), which includes:
90 ECTS from professional and compulsory courses, as well as internships.
30 ECTS from elective courses.
The minimum grade point average (GPA) required for graduation is 60 out of 100. Additionally, students must score at least 50 out of 100 in end-of-semester exams.

Attendance is mandatory:
Students must attend at least 70% of theoretical courses.
Attendance for practical courses is set at a minimum of 80%.

Profile of the Programme

Program Overview
The program includes basic medical science courses as well as professional courses. Elective courses in the curriculum support both professional development and social and cultural growth.
At the end of the first year, students complete a 6-week internship at Dokuz Eylül University Oral and Dental Health Application and Research Center or at other dental hospitals, private clinics, and polyclinics approved by the Program Chair.
Students are trained to be individuals who strictly adhere to medical ethics and deontological rules, respect patient rights, and possess the mental and physical qualities necessary to perform their duties under any circumstances.

Program Goals and Objectives
The program aims to train Oral and Dental Health Technicians who can work in healthcare units and are capable of:
-Preparing the clinical environment for all dental procedures.
-Recording the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of diseases.
-Taking responsibility for patient admission, treatment, and record-keeping.
-Managing crisis situations during emergencies.
-Ensuring hygiene and sterilization in clinical settings.
-Admitting patients and preparing them for examination.
-Managing both written and verbal communication within their unit.
-Demonstrating strong patient communication skills and empathy.
-Providing support by facilitating interaction between patients, their relatives, and healthcare personnel.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates of our program can apply to ÖSYM and, if successful in the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS), transfer to bachelor's degree programs in Emergency Aid and Disaster Management, Nursing, Health Management, and Social Work.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

In the courses, student evaluation is carried out according to the proportions specified in the course syllabus, in line with the course credit. This includes one midterm exam, and depending on the course characteristics and the instructor's preference, assignments may also be evaluated. There is one final exam at the end of the semester. Students who do not succeed in the final exam will have the opportunity to take a make-up exam. In addition to the final and make-up exams, if specified in the course syllabus, assignments may also be included in the evaluation. To pass the course, students must achieve a minimum success grade of 60.

Graduation Requirements

Students must successfully complete courses and internships equivalent to 120 ECTS credits in order to graduate. The course passing system is applied, and students must achieve a minimum success grade of 60 out of 100 in each course to pass. For single course exams, the success grade is 50.
