Course Objective

Primary aim of this course to give some insights on corpus-based translation studies by giving special emphasis upon so-called translation universals. Translation universals, namely explicitation, simplification, normalization, leveling out among others, will be analyzed and tested considering different language pairs.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will be able to acquire the basic theories, approaches, and specialized terminology of the corpus-based translation studies.
2   They will be able to apply these theories and approaches in actual translation situations in a variety of Turkish and English texts.
3   They will be able to make qualitative and quantitative analysis of translated texts in both languages and evaluate the specific choices made by the translator.
4   They will be able to perceive, describe and define translationese features.
5   They will be able to test and interpret the instances of translation universals in actual translation situations and criticisms.

In this course attendance is compulsory. Students are expected to read given assignments and prepare a report on them with two questions they raise for each article before coming to class. Each student is expected to conduct an individual research based on course-content.
