Course Objective

In this course, it is aimed to analyze Byzantine monumental painting examples from Anatolia and outside Anatolia primarily stylistically and iconographically. In addition, it is also aimed to determine the impact of the changing understanding of decoration during and after Iconoclasm on the period by examining new programs and examples. In this course, it is aimed to analyze the monumental painting examples of Byzantine art primarily technically, stylistically and iconographically through examples of buildings from Anatolia to Istanbul. In addition, Byzantine manuscripts of the early and middle Byzantine period will be analyzed, focusing on the character of the period.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   General definition of Byzantine painting art, and production techniques are explained. Discuss the similarities and differences according to different periods.
2   Image examples of Byzantine periods, to evaluate in terms of the iconographic and stylistic features.
3   Will be able to evaluate Byzantine Painting by considering all political, social, religious, economic and artistic dimensions of the period.
4   Will be able to evaluate the place of Byzantine paintings in Byzantine architecture and decorative arts and make chronological determinations.
5   Understands the importance of Byzantine cultural heritage and gains awareness of conservation awareness.
