Course Objective

The purpose of the course is to provide the student with essential information on cultural, socio-economic and political characteristics of the countries of Africa, focusing on the sub-saharan part of the countries and with regard to their implications for the business environment.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to explain the cultural, socio-economic and political dynamics of African people and countries, in order to assess the business opportunities for this region.
2   Be able to analyse and interpret the evolution of regional cooperation and integration movements in Africa, to make inferences for the business environment in this region.
3   Be able to recognize the common business practices and traditions in Africa, to assess their implications for doing business with in this region.

1. The learner will explain the cultural, socio-economic and political dynamics of African people and countries, to assess the business opportunities in this region.
2. The learner will recognize the major international cooperation and integration schemes among the African countries and make inferences on their implications for the business environment.
3. The learner will demonstrate the common business practices and traditions in Africa, in order to assess their implications for doing business in this region.

Course Policies and Rules

1. Attending at least 70 % of lectures is mandatory.
2. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
3. Although the course is mainly based on lectures, around 20 % of each session is intended for class discussion, based on the lecture itself and assigned readings. Therefore, students are expected to be prepared for class participation at each session.
